According to Georges Niang of Iowa State, the Boston Celtics offered their head coaching job to Fred Hoiberg before they offered it to Brad Stevens. See the video interview:
3:55 mark - Niang "I know he is committed to us. Even after Brad Stevens got the Celtics job, he texted me and said Boston offered me the job and I turned it down."
People in New England will remember Georges name because he played his prep ball at Tilton Academy before enrolling at Iowa State. Niang is orginally from Lawrence, Ma. This sounds like a text a coach sends a player as a joke. I'm not buying that Hoiberg was offered the job before Brad Stevens. Hoiberg was an NBA player, executive and now succesfful college coach but Stevens' resume is much more impressive as a head coach.
Everything Danny has said to the media about Stevens is that he was his first choice ... as of 2010, Stevens was a target. Regardless, it is an interesting comment from an Iowa State player with New England ties.
UPDATE: Tweet from Georges Niang to @sportstalkmatt: "I said it as a joke. Can we not take this out if context! Hence that joke when he said he had enough Boston dealing with me" ..,...
